Driving To Thailand

10/06/2024

What documents to prepare ?

  1. Driver & passengers passports (at least 6 months validity from the date of entering Thailand)
  2. Original car registration card (or geran) [altho some check-points do accept photocopy, but it’s better to have the original with you just in case]
  3. Car insurance(s)
  4. TM2 form – Name of Conveyance – Fill and Print 2 copies
  5. TM3 form – Passenger List – Fill and Print 2 copies

Others (if the car is registered under company’s or owner is not travelling together)

  1. Original Copy of Authorized letter from Car Owner / Company (Letter Sample Here)
  2. Copy of Car Owner’s Passport / Company’s Form 24 + Form 49 or Section 58

Insurance & More

There are 4 insurance in total (1 is compulsory, others are optional)

  1. Compulsory Insurance – this is a must-buy insurance for all vehicles entering and exiting Thailand. This insurance solely covers the cost of the parties’ treatment in the Thai hospital.
  2. Voluntary (3rd party) InsuranceThe insurance will protect you from third-party claims if you are involved in an accident. It also saves you from having to pay out unanticipated compensation. I’d recommend it, especially if you are driving into township (not just roaming border town, for eg. Betong, Dannok)
  3. Extension 101 Insurance – This insurance is a continuation of the automobile insurance used in Malaysia. You have to contact your insurance agent directly to obtain additional coverage before entering into Thailand. This insurance will cover your own car damage if it happens in Thailand.
  4. Personal Travel Insurance – This is the typical travel insurance which some of us have purchased an annual or per trip basis.

Personally, I’d recommend to purchase Compulsory + Voluntary insurance.

Where and How to buy Compulsory & Voluntary Insurance?

I typically purchase from these two agencies, but there are plenty more; do not hesitate to choose your own.

To make a purchase, simply send them a WhatsApp message with the owner’s passport and a copy of the car registration card, along with the date of entry into Thailand. They do take Touch n Go payments, and as soon as your insurance is ready, they will deliver it to you over WhatsApp.
